I love reading books that speak out on political issues and current events and this book was no exception. It was so politically correct and interesting to read. In addition, it was scientific and touches the subjects of psychology, politics, science, gun control, etc. and it really tugs at your heartstrings and makes you feel all emotions.

In Final Notice, Van Fleisher creates a world where with a watch a person is able to know how much time they have before they die. The book follows multiple characters such as the creator of the watch, to users of the watch. We see elderly couple Trudi and Vince and their dog Miles. I personally loved that the reader gets different perspectives on how the watch affects many different people mainly the elderly.

The book touches on the harsh treatment of the elderly and immigrants in America and how people tend to turn to guns and abuse the second amendment. I loved this about the book and the author was not afraid to speak out on these issues and talk about them which is so important and so refreshing. Personally, my favorite character was Trudi, she was a voice of reason and is such a lovely woman who enjoys folk music and is so sweet.

This book reinforces the fact that guns are never the answer which nowadays is something not very many people understand. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone so that we can all educate ourselves on the effect of our actions and words and on the effect of guns on society. Although this book is completely fictional and I personally would not like a watch that tells me when I will die, the underlying themes of this book are important. Everyone needs to read this book and I will definitely recommend this to my family and friends. I love that the author was not afraid to speak out on this topic.

In terms of the writing style, it is written in 3rd person with various different people represented and the author pops in and makes a funny side note towards the end which does not hinder reading at all. There is some profanity so if it bothers you skip over it but still please definitely read this book. The author certainly knows how to touch hearts because I was almost crying at the events. I didn’t really like the fact that almost all the characters were dying or were mistreated right before my eyes but that, of course, was necessary to move the story along. It really made me think about how we as a society should focus on how we treat others especially the elders and minorities. Telling someone to “go back to your own country” has such a deep meaning and it really hurts and pushing an elderly man in the street also has a deep meaning and it hurts. We tend to only focus on ourselves but this book made me rethink my entire life and how I treat everyone around me, even strangers. A small act of kindness and going out of your way to help someone or standing up for what you believe can really make a difference and change someone’s life.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars for the reason that the author has such a good way with words and storytelling and made me feel deep emotions. I thought about all of the people in my life and I thought about gun violence and this book is a reminder. A reminder to be kind and be a good person to anyone and everyone and that is simply one of the best lessons a person can learn. I absolutely loved Trudi and Vince, my new favorite fictional elderly couple and of course all the other characters and represented minorities. I also loved all of the amazing action in the book. Please read it!
