Pancake Money by Finn Bell is a crime fiction novel, and the plot consists of the murder of the three old priests and the police investigation. Set in the city of Dunedin and its landscapes and many important places come under the frame of this novel. As the investigation takes the two detectives in a pub at the Baldwin Street and for a moment the readers steal a glance at the world's steepest street. And the most important aspect of this novel is its narrative elegance and developed characterizations. The dialogues are so powerful and sometimes become ethical. The main theme of the novel is sexual abuse and vengeance for victims.
The story of the novel begins with the brutal murder of father Mucci a retired Catholic priest. And the two detectives Pollo and Boby reach the crime scene for investigation. To their surprise, they find the naked body of father Mucci in a horrible state like a puddle of meat. The very next day father Thomas Bern gets killed and the third- day father Sean Corcoran in a similar way. Three murders in three days with a consistent pattern. And the serial killer is still roaming free and no witnesses for the murders. A mind-boggling situation for the two detectives and they search for the lead.
As the investigation progresses the two detectives, find themselves in dangerous situations. And there are gunfights between the gangsters and the two detectives. And in a gunfight Pollo takes the shot and dies that leaves Bobby without his mentor and best friend, but he continues the investigation.
My favorite character in the novel is Pollo as he knows a lot about the crimes and the psychology of the killers and always guides Bobby in difficult situations. The complete description of the deformed and burnt bodies of the old priests is not a good option and I don't like this type of description.
The investigation raises many interesting questions about the ethics, child abuse and priesthood, for finding the logic behind the killings of the old priests.
The final part of the novel is full of thrills and suspense as Bobby finally comes to know the whereabouts of the serial killer. And with the help of Alkaline Ben from Māori tribe locates the place of the killer as he's been hiding down beyond Riverton.
Finn Bell writes in a clear and lucid style and his skill for characterization is admirable.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. As the plot of this novel is very bold and interesting. And with powerful dialogues and pacy sequences make this novel very engaging. I didn't find any error or grammatical mistakes and the presentation of the book is very professional.
