Pancake Money by Finn Bell is a gripping crime thriller which explores religion and gang culture in New Zealand, using true to life history and stories to help captivate the reader.
The story starts with the reader being introduced to the two main characters, and the drama and excitement starts very quickly. We see two police officers, Bobby and Pollo, as they have to investigate their first crime scene of the story. From then on, the reader gets in to the head Bobby and Pollo as they try and solve their crime and find out who is responsible.
This book had me gripped from the very start. One of my favourite aspects of the book was the relationships in the book. The relationship between Bobby and Pollo at first glance seems like a purely professional relationship between two police officers, however, as you read further in to the book you can see that they truly care for each other beyond being partners. You are also given an idea of the relationship that Bobby has at home, and the battle he has as he struggles to juggle a good work and family life balance.
Once you start reading this book you are drawn in to the world. I needed to know what going on, and what was going to happen next. Every time I thought I might have an idea of who Bobby and Pollo were after, and who was committing the crimes, another twist happened which would prove me wrong. This was an exciting aspect of the book that kept me gripped however, as the twists always made sense and I would then be intent on figuring out the next part of the story.
One of my favourite parts of this book comes once the story is finished. An afterword written by the author which allows the reader to see the amount of research and interest which has been invested in the story. Finn Bell has explained to the reader the background to different characters, places and historical concepts that have been used in the book. Throughout the story, different gangs and places in New Zealand are mentioned, things which I knew nothing about. However, it was a nice surprise to get to the end of the story and then have the chance to read in to the back story behind the author’s use of the names and places he had chose to put in his story.
Once I sat down to read Pancake Money, I truly struggled to put it down. It captivated me, moved me, shocked and surprised me until the very end. I give Pancake Money by Finn Bell 4 out of 4 stars.
