The Prize by Geoffrey M Cooper is a riveting medical thriller that explores the competitive nature of the medical research community and the lengths some will go to in the search for a new drug. The protagonist Assistant Professor Pam Weller is into her fourth year in the search for a drug to fight Alzheimer's and running out of time to get a significant publication that will get her Academic tenure. Pam developed a brain cell culture that will allow her assistants systematically to search for the drug.

Holly Singer, one of Pam's research assistants, finds the drug they have all been seeking. Because she won't be the first Author of this remarkable publication, Holly decides she won't get all the credit that she deserves. Holly chooses to contact Eric Prescott who is a highly regarded Research Scientist who also is looking for an Alzheimer’s drug. Coincidently Eric has already been trying to decide how he can determine how far along Pam is in her search for an Alzheimer’s drug. They choose to meet at an upcoming science convention. After spending several days together in relative secrecy, they have developed a very intricate scheme to steal the drug and completely discredit Pam.

I enjoyed this book and at the same time learned in this scientific field discovery, and subsequent publishing is essential for career growth. The characters are all highly intelligent dedicated people who have the primary goal of finding cures for human suffering. Unfortunately, many other factors brought into play, money is the key player, and without research grants, nothing will get accomplished. Tenure is also a very serious issue, without it there will be no job. Underlying everything else is the goal of receiving the Holy Grail of the medical researcher, the very sought after and elusive Nobel Prize.

Although the storyline was well thought out and written the antagonist, Eric Prescott was introduced very early and was in no doubt going to be the bad guy. That didn't kill the story but did take away from the suspense that would have been created waiting to find out what he was planning. That was my only criticism of the entire story, overall it was very good from start to finish.

This was an intriguing story that will keep the reader turning pages. I found no spelling or grammatical errors and would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys any genre of thriller. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
