The Prize by Geoffrey M Cooper is a story about research scientists in pursuit of the coveted Nobel Prize and to what lengths some will go to attain it. Eric Prescott is an acclaimed research scientist in the field of Alzheimer’s, who has already received many awards. He is determined to secure a Nobel Prize by finding a drug for Alzheimer’s treatment. Pamela Weller is a faculty member at Harvard’s Langmere Institute, who is in the process of earning tenure. She and her assistants are doing laboratory trials to find an effective Alzheimer’s drug. The author describes a conspiracy to transfer credit for a newly identified Alzheimer’s drug from one lab and researcher to another lab and researcher. The plan takes place, with a twist. The protagonist must solve what really transpired or she’ll suffer catastrophic consequences.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Prize. Mr. Cooper used just the right amount of character development. The story doesn’t become bogged down in irrelevant detail, which allowed me to use my imagination to flesh out the details. The introduction of new characters in the later chapters of the book was done when it was appropriate and only to the degree needed to move the story along. The storyline introduced aspects of the scientific research community which I didn’t previously know. There was enough detail to make the tale believable and understandable.
The Prize was an effortless read. Mr. Cooper wrote an entertaining story. Reading it was an engaging, diverting pastime. I can’t think of anything I did not like about this story and the way the author wrote it.
Mr. Cooper’s writing style transported me back to my childhood when I loved to read The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Mr. Cooper communicates in commonly used language. When scientific information relevant to the story needed to be conveyed to his readers, the author did so effectively and simply. Having a paper copy is the only thing which would’ve improved my experience of reading The Prize. This is the first book I’ve read using the Kindle application on my laptop.
In conclusion, I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars and highly recommend it for anyone who’s looking for a brief reprieve from life’s stressors. For those who read quickly, this book can be read cover to cover in a day’s time. I gave this book a 4 because it’s well written, engaging, and fast-paced. This book has almost no editing errors, which I appreciate as they can be extremely distracting and confusing. This book is appropriate for teens to adults. I believe anyone who enjoys mysteries, reads to relax and is looking for an entertaining story will enjoy The Prize.
