The book Final Notice, written by Van Fleisher, is a great read for a fan of suspense. The book takes place in modern times and runs headlong into some issues that are very present. Van Fleisher is not afraid to get into the nitty-gritty of some controversial problems the world faces today, guns and gun control being the main issue.
The book follows a number of seemingly random people’s lives with one thing that connects them all to each other: A watch that tells them when they are going to die. Thus begins the question of “What would you do if you knew - for certain - that you had one week to live?” Some people turn to getting rid of a person who has done them wrong, others chose to do something they normally could not, and some even use it to spend more time with their family and friends before they die. A portion of the characters in the book then begin question whether or not this violence could be stopped with the use of gun control after a school shooting takes place. As controversial as the topic of gun control is, I praise the book for being able to approach it and discuss it without making it purely what the book is about or pushing it in the reader’s face.
The novel also brings up a question of morals. It leaves the reader with a lot to think about regarding what they would do in a similar situation and whether or not they morally agree with the actions that the characters took. Since the issues in the book are so current it is easy to stop and think about how the novel can be related back to you; it is not difficult to put yourself in the character's’ shoes and still have it be relevant to today’s world. It is a great read and it leaves the reader with some moral digging of their own to do.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I rated it so highly because it is written in a way that, no matter whether or not you agree with the characters and their opinions, can still read the book and not feel like it is attacking you. The book does talk about gun control with a few of the characters in particular, but it is not in a way that makes it seem over the top like Van Fleisher is trying to push an agenda. It is written so that it is wholly the character’s opinions and nothing more. This is highly esteemable because it is quite difficult to write in such a manner, especially in today’s climate. I gave Final Notice 4 out of 4 starts instead of only three because the book was well written and well edited so that it appealed to whoever was reading it.
The characters that Van Fleisher created were more than two dimensional; they seemed to spring to life with their own unique ideas and beliefs and there was no shortage when it came to the representation of different ethnic backgrounds. This novel is inclusive and very forward thinking without being too pushy about it’s ideas and for that I am willing to say that I found no fault with the book.
