Final Notice by Van Fleisher is a compelling and thought-provoking novel with captivating personal stories and political undertones. The common thread throughout the novel is the VitalTech2, a new fitness and health tracking watch with enhanced capabilities. This watch can monitor vital signs and even detect impending death with its Final Notice feature. This feature raises questions about human morality and what a person might do, for good or evil, if they knew death was imminent.
The novel follows multiple characters and depicts how the watch influences their lives while raising political points regarding gun safety and American healthcare. Through multiple characters’ points of view and actions, the reader gets a sense of the bigger picture and how one technological innovation can impact people from the company’s perspective and the buyers of the product. Each character’s story contributes to the plotline and raises essential questions about certain aspects of our current society. For example, the novel follows Vince and Trudi, an elderly couple struggling with age discrimination and taunting from youth, as they teeter between anti-gun sentiments and the desire for protection. Additionally, Rasha and Qasim experience discrimination based on their Syrian heritage. Throughout the novel, these characters either get a VitalTech2 watch or interact with people who have one, and incidents such as violence, discrimination, school shootings, and news broadcasts influence their actions.
I loved the political undertones throughout Final Notice. Subtle jabs at our current society kept me interested and provoked reflective thinking. Additionally, each character and situation contributed something significant to the story; nothing was trivial, over-emphasized, or drawn out. Furthermore, with respect to the advanced technology, every detail regarding the workings of the VT2 watch was perfectly explained without becoming pedantic.
My favorite aspect of this novel was the author’s use of the political issues challenging our current society: gun regulation, healthcare, and racial discrimination, to build a fascinating and thought-provoking story around the release of a new fitness watch. There was little I disliked about this book, but if I had to note one critique, it would be that there wasn’t a great deal of action. There were many scenes where significant events were discussed or described, but it wasn’t until the end that the reader witnessed the action firsthand. Nevertheless, I still found the book fast-paced and engaging.
I thoroughly enjoyed Final Notice, so I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I rate this book highly because I loved reading it, and I found the content relevant, interesting, and thought-provoking. Additionally, there were no editing errors and the writing style was easy to follow and engaging. Anyone who is interested in the current political climate and has strong views about gun regulations and healthcare will be fascinated by this book. However, those who prefer to use books as an escape from politics will not enjoy this. Ultimately, Final Notice is an amazing novel with just enough political material to leave the reader interested and reflective, but not to the point of mental exhaustion or boredom.
