Have you ever wondered how drug addicts without jobs spend their day? I always thought they just get high and sleep the whole day. But reading the book, The Misadventures of Jimmy Crookshank by D.R. Blair, gave me a whole new level of understanding to how far drug users would go to get drugs and the effects it has on their way of life. The book revolves around the life of Jimmy Crookshank. For some twisted and perverted reason, he loved when ladies called his name in full. Jimmy could do drugs anywhere. It was as if he was allergic to staying sober.

Jimmy decided to leave Australia to London against the wishes of his numerous friends. At the airport, he discovered drugs in his pocket and chose to swallow it right in the plane. At that moment, I knew Jimmy Crookshank was going to be a fun character. The moment he stepped into London, the cold that welcomed him made him start to regret why he left Sydney, Australia. Another noticeable thing about this book was that some of the names were ridiculously funny. The combination of Jimmy and his friends, Lisa and Johnny, seemed disastrous. They roamed the streets for drugs, had so much to drink, and liked to party excessively.

Surprisingly, that was not the main reason why Jimmy was in London. You’d know it was not for something legit. Jimmy was there to grow marijuana with his old mate, Russell. They planned to grow marijuana in Russell’s brother’s house. In the process of trying to get themselves sorted, I saw a different part of Jimmy. He stopped using drugs for a while so he could focus on the business he hoped would make them wealthy. Jimmy had the wildest imaginations, and most of his thoughts were offensive. The book was full of crazy characters.

The author did well in character development. Each character was well developed. The author portrayed the life of a drug user in a way that was realistic. The book was funny and easy to read. It was funny how Jimmy lost Russell’s brother’s Aston-Martin and lied about seeing it, and they also buried a dead body in his backyard. The author had me rooting for them to succeed in their business.

Furthermore, the book only explores a drug-based theme, showing how the life of drug users could be. I felt that there were lots of missed opportunities to introduce elements that would have made the book more interesting. For example, the author could have introduced a crime element when the body was buried to add more suspense. The plot development was not good enough, and there was no moral lesson to the story in the book.

The book was well edited. I didn't find a single error throughout the book, and this helped my reading flow smoothly.

In conclusion, the book was fun to read. I did not like that the book had no lesson to gain from it. The jokes were a little insensitive at times and I, being a religious person, did not like the fact that the Bible got used when they snorted cocaine. But I liked that the book had a certain feeling while reading it, I felt like it always had something to offer, and it kept me glued to reading it. For the reasons above, I will rate the book 2 out of 4 stars. I am also taking out a star for the poor development of the plot in the book. However, I would recommend the book to fans of adventure novels, but I won’t recommend it to people who are not comfortable reading about drugs.

Sounds like a great book if someone just wants to be entertained, but I prefer more of a plot, so I'll pass. Great review!

I don't know about this. If you're going to detail the life of drug users in full and what lengths they go to to get their fixes, I really think there should be some kind of lesson. Otherwise what's the point? I think I'll pass on this one. Thanks.

It sounds an intriguing read. But without a good plot it looks a bit dry. So I will avoid this one. Thanks for this honest review.

I don't think I could personally "watch" so much drug use without much change or lesson. Thanks for the great review!

Thank you for your honest review. At first, I thought there will be one or two lessons learnt from the whole story, apparently, there isn't. I also do not appreciate anyone making a joke out of the bible especially when inhaling drugs?! I think I will pass on this one too.

I don't think I am interested in reading this book. The drug alone being the content of the book is a turn off for me

Jimmy's life seemed fun all through the book. Shame about the book not having any lessons to gain from it

I'm not sure this book is a good fit for me, but the name "Crookshank" sounds so funny.

Do you think that the excessive drug use was used a method to shock people and thus a form of sensationalism? Or do you think it was done in order to portray reality "accurately"? Thanks for this review. It was honest and thoughtful :D

If there is no moral lesson in a book that has the drug's plot, is that mean the only information we will receive is to learn how to grow weed and how to open a business out of it? Or maybe the story is just to take a peek inside the addiction life? Either way, I think I'll pass. Thanks for your review!
