I don't think anyone chooses to be poor, I think some people find other things more important than earning a lot of money. Everyone needs to figure out their own priorities and we shouldn't judge people for having different priorities than us.

From the viewpoint of some characeters, being poor was a way to explore. You had your own interests to chase, and no one yo shackle you to an arranged marriage. Beung poor in Korea is sometimes seen as the force of Fate.

Poverty is something that many people all over the world find undesirable, it's understandable that no one wants to face that much hardship in their life, either financially or socially. As someone who lives in an Asian country, it's not that surprising that the rich in Korea are tied to all sorts of obligations and they have to maintain their wealth, in contrast to someone who is poor but is free to do whatever they want since they are not tied to any obligations.

I truly hate that the poor are not given the opportunity to better themselves. In Korea they see it as once poor always poor. Your family name chose your social status and your wealth or lack of.

Though they weren't greatly influential, the poor class of Korea as shown in The Vanished still manged to life fairly pleasant loves and contributed to the revolution efforts.
