I think it was just a piece of narrative to get the story moving. Their featuring as a cover was not necessary as they weren't a massive plot point.

The roses would have made more sense. I guess the roses would have been on the cover as they were so special to Lady Sougyon. And I wonder if, when deciding on the cover, a more oriental type of flower seemed more suitable to the author.
