Agatha Christie vs Arthur Conan Doyle

Yes, there were detective stories before Doyle, but after him, I think that all detective writers bore him in mind.

I may prefer Sherlock's mysteries, but I prefer how Agatha Christie writes in general, her style and characters. Obviously, they are both masters of the genre. I loved reading any of their books.

It seems that 1927 wasn’t a good year for either.

The last three Holmes stories have just come into public domain in the US, as has Christie’s “Big Four”.

In my opinion, none of them are great.

The Big Four is more like James Bond than Poirot - especially with the villains having a secret underground base in the mountains.

The Veiled Lodger - there is no solving of the mystery. Holmes recalls the past and the lady fills in some gaps.

I think they are both good authors but there is something that makes Christie's story stand out. She tells it better and makes one to want to be involved.

I have loved Sherlock Holmes so much that felt his retirement like his death sentence. Definitely Conan Doyle comes first. Then Agatha Christy's works are fantastic as well.

No one does it like Doyle does it. Christie could not possibly stand up to the madman that literally killed off his most popular character that made him the most money. Even ignoring the works themselves (which, I still think Holmes is better than Poirot, sue me) the lore behind it is insane!

Conan Doyle was the father of the genre, so you gotta add points for him. Agatha Christie's works often focus on emotional/psychological details and the human condition which is a different flavour of detective stories. She also has more humour, but not everyone likes that in a detective novel.

When I intended to read for Agatha Christie, I picked 'The seven dials mystery'. I didn't enjoy much the book as much as I do for Doyle's novels. If anyone has a suggestion for a better Christie book, please let me know.

Agatha Christie lived a little later than Conan Doyle, so I guess there's something a little more modern about her prose, which might make it an easier read. I've not read too many of their books, but my experience has been that Agatha Christie is great for a quick, gripping read - and Conan Doyle is great for when you want some really elaborate descriptions and settings to get lost in! Sherlock Holmes and Poirot are both such iconic characters

she wrote so many books that moved readers, Agatha Christie is better known. For instance, the cinematic adaptation of "Death on the Nile" is based on her novel, but Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes volumes are unique works of writing.

I think Christie's deductions are more realistic, and she, more than Doyle, subscribes to the belief that the reader should have all the clues, which makes it much more meaningful to try to solve her mysteries as a reader. But Doyle's writing is more fun - more like an adventure/thriller novel with a touch of mystery.
