Was thinking it will be a short novel until I read and read lols. For me there is nothing to dislike about the book. The author did a good job and inspired me alot
I found this book to give a fascinating insight into the psychology of guilt and shame and the society's response to it. The author seems to be extremely critical of puritan theology and rightly so. But we have to concede that his criticisms are based not on a wholistic perspective but a narrow focus on the worst and exaggerated mistakes of the puritans. The most fascinating character in this novel is Hester, who fully recognizes the mistake she committed and bears the disproportionate punishment laid on her with patience. She displays unconditioned loyalty to Dimmesdale, a hypocrite priest who rationalizes hiding his sin with Hester with a veil of compassion and towards the church. The novel has a well deserved end with all characters acknowledging the reality and deciding to face it boldly.
I was forced to read this book for exam during High School. I disliked it because I don't like being forced to read books. I will check it out in my bookshelf.
Such a beautiful writing! It is very sentimental and personal. It reminded me of the "Letter to my father". It is an amazing piece of work, one of my favorites.
