Re: least favorite classics

The Catcher in the Rye, The Handmaid's Tale, The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath are my least favourite Classics. This is my most beloved genre but the above were disappointing and left a bad taste in my mouth. Loathed the first two particularly.

I have heard of but not read Lolita...and know I would despise it.

To be honest, I didn't really enjoy Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities. The build-up seemed extremely slow to me, all for Sydney to die a martyr's death for a woman who might or might not love him.

I recently read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass for the first time. While granting these were intended as children's books, I had always been under the impression that there was nonetheless some social commentary and perhaps even some mysticism buried in them.

There is, a bit, but it's really thin on the ground. And, even as fantastical children's books go, I found them a bit abrupt in their transitions, and overall lacking in definite plot (both especially in the case of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland).

Certainly fun, especially for very young children, but seem overrated to me.

This is a sin against literature. :D
Dostoevsky and Tolstoy are in the top 5 of the greatest writers of all time.

The Catcher in the Rye, as someone else said. It is the most boring and irritating book I have ever read. Nothing happens, and I hate how the writer writes, it's too informal to me. Plus, I can't stand the main character, he is kind of an insignificant man. I know some people consider it a great book, but despite being young (18) myself I didn't get it...

I didn’t like the Helen Keller book. I also don’t care for anything Shakespeare. I like books that flow easily with words in an organized manner I can understand.

Almost all Shakespearean books are least of my favorite because of the complexity of language. I have to stress my brain a lot to understand his story lines.
