Post by mumoftwo »

Hello, please could anyone recommend a version of "The Cherry Orchard " for my book club? there are few versions translated by different authors , also there is a modern version too and I'm not sure what to get. Many thanks.

As a writer, Chekhov is very gifted and many of his stories are very interesting, however when he started writing scripts, such as The Cherry Orchard, Uncle Ivan, they were not successful. Tolstoy wrote that his scripts were even worse than Shakespeare's, at least in his plays, the stage full of corpses, Chekhov didn't even have that.

I would do some Internet searches, find a theater company that has performed the play recently, and e-mail them to ask why they picked a particular translation and why.

Sad book that brings sadness. Reading that book succumbed to nostalgia for those days that you can't return.
