An overhyped classic you really didn't like

Post by Nalence »

For me it is The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Nothing captured my attention and I found that I had to force myself to read it. If it had been any longer I would have stopped. It did catch my interest a little in the end, but not enough to redeem the book in any way.

I could not get into Lord of the Rings. I personally did not care for the books or the movies.

All Kafka's books are overrated. He is the single most overrated writer of the twentieth century. Die Verwandlung is pretty average, IMHO.
Heart! We will forget him!
You an I, tonight!
You may forget the warmth he gave,
I will forget the light.

When you have done, pray tell me
That I my thoughts may dim;
Haste! lest while you're lagging.
I may remember him!

I really didn't enjoy Brave New World upon reflection. I wanted to like it because I felt like I should-- but it really wasn't a book that captured my attention at the first go around. I may reread it and maybe I will find something more in it, but it didn't live up to the hype that it was given to me in school.

Ulysses by James Joyce. I don’t usually come away from books hating them but man, I hated Ulysses. It’s too long, it’s seriously dull, and it’s experimental to the point of being unreadable. And yet it’s so popular!

'To Kill a Mockingbird' there are many other books with similar themes and plotlines that are more captivating and emotional. Many of Shakespeare's work is also very overrated, but because they were so famous for such a long time. I guess context is key here.

I think Macbeth is an overhyped and overrated classic that is not as great as I thought it would be.

I also think that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an overhyped classic that has little meaning.

It's a tie: "Wuthering Heights" (every single character is an asshole) and "Portrait of a Lady" (which I've read 3 or 4 times, hope springing eternally that THIS TIME it will be interesting, and I'm always wrong)

War and Peace. I just couldn't get through it. Although to be fair, I read the eBook version, and maybe I would have had better success with a print version.

I had to really think for a minute about whether I disliked Lord of the Flies, which I read in high school, or Catcher in the Rye, which I read in college, more. In the end, I think I have to go with Catcher in the Rye because I think the boys in Lord of the Flies actually showed some remorse and some responsibility for what they did, but Holden still had a long way to go.

I really tried to like Moby Dick, and at times I did get really into it, but a lot of it just felt like multiple pages of rambling without anything actually happening or at least anything of relevance. Which is a shame, because I was really enjoying Melville's writing style in parts - it was engaging, witty and flowing, and then he was off into another ramble...

Whenever I read a "classic" that just does not resonate with me, I wonder what I lack that other were able to develop such a connection with the renowned work.
