Botchan - as called by his old nanny, Kiyo - is a young man who has his first job as a teacher in a small village. Raised in a city, he was not satisfied with his job. He complains about his job but he doesn’t have the courage to quit the job. He is hardly impressed by the people he deals with, especially to some “rules” he is trying to rebel. Although this book is a light book for those who want to try to read Japanese literature, it is actually a quite "serious" book. How he makes some unique nicknames for other teachers, is probably the only humorous side of the story. The story itself focus on how he deals with his problems as a new teacher.
