There are many well-known female authors of classical novels. Most, if not all, people know Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Mary Shelley, Virgina Woolf, and others.

Are there any lesser known female authors of classics that you are fan of? What books have you read of theirs, or books that you've heard of but haven't read? Any recommendations?

I love to read classics written by women because I love seeing what society and female life was like years and years ago through the eyes of a woman, because no one can tell the story of a woman better than a woman herself.

I recommend Lady Audley's Secret, a sensational novel written by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. I know a bit about Braddon's life, and would encourage those interested in female classic writers to give her a quick google search.

I don't know if she is lesser-known, but Frances Hodgson Burnett is one of my all-time favorite authors. I loved The Secret Garden and A Little Princess. They are both in my top three favorite books. I also love Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott.

I adore LM Montgomery who wrote the Green Gables series.
I don't know if "Bridge to Terabithia" by Katherine Patterson is considered a classic or not, but if it isn't it definitely should.

You are certainly right that Bridge To Teribithia should be a classic. My girls both read that while in school and they loved it. My youngest hates to read, but she read it twice.

Louisa May Alcott is one of my favorite female authors of all times. Laura Ingalls Wilder, while I would not say is lesser-known, is another. I have recently discovered that I love Adrianna Trigianni as well as Karen Kingsbury.

Jane Austen Daphne Au Revoir, Virginia Wolff would be my favourite ever.

Jane Austen and Chimamanda always blew my mind. I can read their works over and over again without getting tired.

Jane Austen, known for "Pride and Prejudice," "Sense and Sensibility," and "Emma and "Charlotte Brontë, famous for "Jane Eyre". These are my best female classic authors.

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. I will recommend these two authors to everyone.

May not be in the same league or same era as Jane Austen or Virginia Wolff, but Georgette Heyer and Agatha Christie may be able to make the list for sheer volume. Also, Daphne du Maurier for her classics Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel. Then of course, there's Diary of Anne Frank (by Anne Frank) and Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. Go girls!

I have heard a lot of people say such a thing about Montgomery. I got intrigued by her books by now and want to give them a try.
