This kind of comparison is unfair. However, if someone put a gun to my head and made me choose, I would have to choose Agatha Christie.

They are both brilliant writers. It would be unfair to pick one over the other. In the crime mystery genre, Agatha Christie was a master, as was Arthur Conan Doyle. I can only think of one advantage for Doyle - the sci-fi and historical novels and plays. That is, Doyle is a more broad-spectrum writer, covering a wider range of topics. For me, this was the deciding factor, and explains why Doyle gained my vote.

Edmund Wilson wrote a few famous essays on the difference he saw between Conan Doyle's Holmes stories and modern detective fiction. The former he saw as an extension of Gothic literature, and to be prized for their atmosphere and evocation. The latter he saw as essentially a form of puzzle rather than an offshoot of literature. A simplistic divide, I know, but one that rings true in my reading. So my vote is for Conan Doyle. Also, Sherlock Holmes as depicted in the first few stories is a truly unfamiliar and erratic character. It took Conan Doyle a few goes to quite pin him down.

If you read Agatha's work then you won't be comparing her to Conan. Conan is good but not to Agatha.

I love Sherlock Holmes, but hands down it has to be Agatha Christie. The way she played with/unapologetically broke the rules of the murder mystery genre put her in another league to everyone else imo.

No author will ever beat the queen of crime mysteries, Agatha. I've read some of Sherlocks cases and I don't correlate both, as I find Poirot's and Ms. Marple's characters more unique and more interesting. Sherlock is mostly a disappointment as Watson suits better the investigator role. Most os Christie's books can't be improved by the movies, however Connan Doyle's are in better hands of filmmakers.

I have a hard time choosing one over the other, because their styles feel so different. As others have mentioned, Agatha Christie gives a great complete story. The way the Sherlock Holmes stories were written varies from short episodes to full novels, and the focus is on the detective more than anything else. I have a fondness for the world of Holmes and the quirkiness of it all (including his return from the dead and even the inconsistencies), which I don’t have for Christie and can’t quite explain. The BBC series is fantastic in my opinion, but I quite liked Sherlock Holmes before that.

Agatha Christie is more popular, because she had a lot more books that were able to inspire readers. For example, the book "Death on the Nile" also has a movie adaption, while the Sherlock Holmes books are one of a kind only, the most notable piece of literature written by Conan Doyle.

I'm of the same opinion that Agatha Christie wins out over Doyle. Having read some Sherlock and plenty of Poirot, there's just something more snappy and engaging with Christie's riding today. But both of them are dated a culturally with some misogyny mixed in. I had a really difficult time with the end of the Lost worlds where the man just started shooting the indigenous peoples amongst all of the dinosaurs and chaos.
