I actually hated this book. Everyone majorly over-reacted in it.

I think it's just preference. I like the movie romeo and julliet compared to the novel.

I read a comic version of this book. I didn't get the point about why it was so famous when I didn't even like the ending.

Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s most acclaimed plays. I feel like almost everybody knows the storyline. Lovely poetry and the movie is nice as well.
Heart! We will forget him!
You an I, tonight!
You may forget the warmth he gave,
I will forget the light.

When you have done, pray tell me
That I my thoughts may dim;
Haste! lest while you're lagging.
I may remember him!

I think Romeo and Juliet is one of the worst plays by Shakespeare. He has such an amazing library of work. His comedies are the best and some other dramas exceed Romeo and Juliet in my opinion.

I realize that this will be a very unpopular opinion, but I've never cared for Romeo and Juliet. It's contrived and frankly ridiculous. You want a great love story? Try reading Anne or something about John and Abigail Adams or Pride and Prejudice or A Promise Kept, the beautiful true love story of Robertson and Muriel McQuilken. Compared to them, Romeo and Juliet is melodramatic nonsense.

The book is fantastic and Shakespeare writes it in such a poetic way. Loved it so much I purchased a A3 size of the play and had it framed.

Of course, I enjoyed reading the book. One interesting aspect to keep in mind is that there is a possibility Shakespear wrote the story as a satire. It is not confirmed, but it would make a lot of sense.

Romeo and Juliet was the set book for my high school literature class - so I read it, analyzed it and did an exam on it. I love the language in the book but ultimately, I find the story unappealing. What is the point of a romance without a happy ending? I don't like tragic romance.

I don't know. It seems like it's very unrealistic to me. The time frame was what? two days. And they were 14, yet felt the need to kill themselves because they couldn't be together. Other works by Shakespeare are more realistic and have deeper messages.

I notice many people pointing out or complaining that the story is about two teenagers falling in love. As if we haven't been there? When you are a teenager - everything from the first look seems dramatic and otherworldly. Not to mention, we are talking about the time when girls were getting married at that age, and mostly to men much older...
Still, would I call it the greatest love story - no, not at all, but the story is beautifully written nonetheless.

I have read this book at school, but I did not particularly like it. However, it does contain beautiful plot twits.

Shakespeare is, of course, undeniably clever with his words and rhetoric, and melodrama aside, every aspect of the story hits the traditional plot points/act structure. I believe the animosity comes from it's branding as an epic love story, the greatest of all time and beloved by all, while the play and its original texts are largely cast aside.
