Icelandic Sagas

Post by Cappy »

Has anyone else here read the Icelandic Sagas? I'm still going through them but so far I am in love. It reminds me a bit of the bible in the sense that it has the whole this guy begot that guy begot that guy ect. which was important at the time I suppose. And like the bible it's filled with stories explaining things that simply couldn't be explained back then. What I really like about the sagas, is getting to the history behind the mythology. The story of Eric the Red and his son, Lief discovering America. Which we know have historical proof what with the settlement found in Newfoundland, Canada. Unlike the bible though, I find the Sagas easier to digest. They were for the every man about the people who founded and lived in Iceland. And unlike the bible, there were some Sagas written by women with a woman's perspective, which I found interesting.

I have read several of the sagas. My favorites are Egil's Saga, King Harald's Saga, & the Vinland Sagas. They are very historic in nature, as you say, like the Old Testament. Also very violent, with feuds that carry on over generations. Keep on reading them.....

I haven't read this fiction but my friends have said so much about it. I hope I enjoy it when I read it. Thanks for the insight.
