The best italian classics

Post by Gloria Kaszyczky »

As an Italian, I am curious to know what italian classics you have read and what are the best in your opinion. My personal favourites are Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler and in general all of his books are amazing, Boccaccio's Decameron, Collodi's The adventures of Pinocchio and finally Vamba's The diary of Johnny Tempest (Gian Burrasca).

What are yours?

The only Italian books I have read are Maciavelli's The Prince and Dante's Inferno. The Prince was straightforward and easily understandable. Inferno I found to be a difficult read. Everything in that book was related to what was contemporary at the time, so I had to either read through passages with little to no understanding of the references or had to constantly be referring to footnotes to try to make sense of the writing.

I would give it to the God Father. The movie is something I watch with family now and then.

I enjoyed The Divine Comedy, read it just after visiting Florence and really liked it.

Born in the US, writing in English.

I suspect that many Italians would regard it as an American novel.
