Because they withstand the winds of change. They remain relevant because they speak to fundamental human emotions, dreams, and the inevitable vicissitudes of time; and they do so eloquently, succinctly, and in a manner which voices the ring of truth. People are born and then, after a lifetime, die, but classic literature is immortal. It will always be there to greet each new generation.

When the last human being leaves this world in some abandoned corner there will remain a dust covered copy of The Iliad.

Why do classic become classic?

Before answering this question on why classics become classic, if you know what the word on it’s own means you can easily guess why
Here are some meanings found
“- judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind.
- remarkably and instructively typical.
- a work of art of recognized and established value”

But the word it’s from Latin classis/classicus ‘belonging to a class or division’, or ‘of the highest class’

But for me a classic becomes a classic if is timeless and eternal

Let’s take an example of a classic book and see why it is classic.
Taking the example of a book I just reread
“The picture of Dorian Gray” written by Oscar Wilde
The book is outstanding due to the fact a new movement called aestheticism or art for art’s sake restarted with his book. “So it’s frankly and typically new”. The portrayal of the characters and the story being about the love a man has secretly for another man, which was against any rule or order at the time being written, it caused a lot of discussion but it is a spectacular book to read nowadays.

To end with I think a classic book is a book that can resist time, it being timeless, is eternal, it living forever as part of art and being valued, read and criticised/praised time after time even thought decades have passed.

I think classic books become classics because they are the books most memorable for the reader.

When the book stands the test of time like The Alchemist. You can read classics without getting tired over and over again.

I think it is important to first determine what a classic is. It can vary a bit depending on who you ask, but typically it is a story that has withstood time. I agree with lots of what I read above from other posts! A story stands the best chance, in my opinion, of becoming classic when it is able to convey a compelling story that speaks to humanity on a fundamental level. It stands in a way that as circumstances and cultures change, there is still an element of relatability that speaks directly to the reader.

They become classicals because they stand the test of time. They never get boring as often as you read.
