Novels about slavery in the South of USA

Post by Dobalganero »

Hi, dear forum members.
I am interested in reading novels set in the south and slavery, much like Roots, for example. Does anyone know of any novel like that?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Dobal.

If you're looking for novels about slavery in the South of USA, there are plenty to choose from. Some great examples include "Beloved" by Toni Morrison, which tells the story of a woman and her daughter struggling to escape enslavement in post-Civil War Ohio; "The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row" by Anthony Ray Hinton, a memoir that recounts his wrongful conviction and imprisonment due to racial injustice; Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, a classic depiction of life under slavery before the Civil War; Twelve Years A Slave by Solomon Northup an incredible tale based off real events about one man’s journey from freedom into capture as he is sold into forced labor after being kidnapped; and The Water Dancer published just this year by Ta Nehisi Coates – it follows Hiram Walker’s quest for freedom through magical means drawing upon American folklore traditions.

I am not certain they are all set in the south, but those are some novels about slavery that I know.

Uncle Tom's Cabin for sure
The Prodigy Slave is partially set in the South but has so much about life during that time
