Arguably Salinger's best book, Franny and Zooey continues the fascinating saga of The Glass family. This particular story focuses on the youngest two siblings. Taking place in a time span of only two days, with perhaps three settings (the bulk of the book is a conversation in a bathroom), Salinger uses his brilliant descriptions, flashbacks, and rich dialogue to share with the reader a sense of decay amongst the family, as well as a brooding pride and a lonely awareness for their separateness. Salinger erases the very idea of a run-on sentence! His humor, complexity, and emotional intelligence dance effortlessly together in this epic story.
