Re: Recommendations of Classic Books

Post by ladyluvsbooks29 »

Hi there! I am new to this site/forum so I thought I would check this place out. I love to read and any new recommendations are welcomed! I love classics, I've read so many over the years. Some I've reread. I just recently finished Anna Karenina, I haven't read it in a few years and something sparked me to pick it back up. Now that I finished I was recommended by a friend to read Madame Bovary. Any other suggestions or insight? Also, I've not fully read Crime and Punishment, that is on a reading list I have.

Well I think animal farm by George Orwell is one of the greatest novels ever written, the ingenuity of the plot is what makes it so special

I love Jane Austen, but especially Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility. I can read them repeatedly and never get tired of her stories and characters. Few classic authors transport me into their stories like she does.

If you liked Pride and Prejudice, I would also recommend North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. They are very different books but do have some plot points in common. It's definitely one of my favorites.

What is your favorite Shakespearean tragedy? Personally, I cannot get over Macbeth. I love Hamlet too, but Macbeth is so rich, it's got everything! I might just be a sucker for stuff with prophesies in them and how they mess with folks. I've recently been re-rereading the play after watching an obscure adaptation of the story to our times, and the research papers on Macbeth are also so varied and in-depth. It's like you can always find something new, some new angle you never examined in that play.

Hamlet is a great classic to read that has influenced many contemporary stories. Once you have read Hamlet, you will see references to the text everywhere. Not only is it a good story, it is also a staple for a modern-day education.

David Copperfield written by Charles Dickens is once of my favourite classics. Another is Alexander Duma's Black Tulip.

I always recommend "The Phantom of the Opera". It is so amazing and so different from the musical or the movie and it is specially interesting to read while listening to the POTP soundtrack.
