Oh, one more short classic is The Mysterious Stranger by Mark Twain. :)

I think “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens is a good one.
Also recommend “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott.

If you are looking for shorter stories to read, why don't you try reading some of Shakespeare's plays?
"The Taming of the Shrew" is actually quite good. I will admit that I did not like it the first time I read it, but I read it again for a college course and fell in love with it.
"King Lear" is another favorite of mine.
"Romeo and Juliet" is one that is read often in schools. I feel it's a bit overused, but still would be a good one to start with.
"Macbeth" was fun to read and analyze.

Hope this is helpful!
Let me know if you would like more story suggestions! I could go on and on and on...

Just go and check out the Jason Bourne series. You might have seen the movies but it doesn't compare to the novels at all.

A book from an author like Enid Byton would be a good read such as The Mystery of the Pantomime Cat. I really like it when I was a child.

Oscar Wilde's pieces are always a winner! The Importance of Being Earnest is a favorite of mine!
The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus is also fascinating and insightful.
Kathrine Mansfield also has collections of short stories that are impactful.

How about Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe? When I was still in my pubescent years Robinson Crusoe was my most read book. I was entertained by his survival story endlessly. Robinson Crusoe stranded on an island learns how to raise goats from the wild. He succeeded in making Friday at least civilized by teaching him to shun his cannibal past. Crusoe also learned how to tend his crops and even bake. And his story ends on a bright side having made his way back to civilization.
