To kill a mockingbird might be long for others but to me, it was very short because of the way I enjoyed it.

I would recommend “The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde” for its admirable depiction of life and beauty.

I really loved Frankenstein for its atmosphere of horror and craziness at the same time. One can easily observe how an innocent kind-hearted creature becomes violent and a brutal murderer.

To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf is fairly short and is a classic must-read in my opinion. For what she does with stream-of-consciousness technique alone.

Bonjour Tristesse by Francoise Sagan is also a classic, in my opinion, that does not get spoken about nearly enough. It is also quite short and very captivating. A wonderful beach/summer read because of the setting. I'm in love with her prose.

Anne of Green Gables. Anne is a funny girl. She will be adopted by two siblings and begin her life in 'Green Gables.' Her story is very interesting.

The Picture of Dorian Grey is a little over 200 pages, but it's still rather short & sweet. To the Lighthouse barely scrapes the 200 page mark. As does Alice in Wonderland, although with that I highly recommend getting the Pinguin Classic hardcover, as the notes & commentary elevate the reading experience to a much higher level. You could also look at the Sherlock Holmes short stories (each of the 54 short stories are only between 20-30 pages long), & there are a few short Hercule Poirot stories too, following on with the detective theme. Most Shakespeare plays also aren't all that long, although if you like plays but are tired of Shakespeare, how about Balladyna by the Polish playwrite Julisz Slowacki for a change of pace? There's also Pygmalion & the Rape of the Lock, two stories written in verse that are very, very short (personally, I prefer Pygmalion over the Rape of the Lock).

I just finished reading Cannery Row by John Steinbeck not too long ago. I enjoyed it. I read it before I visited Monterey--it was really cool to see some of the places he was talking about and even the laboratory that the doctor kept his specimens in.
