William Golding's Fire Down Below

Hi, just joined to seek help with this novel. I thought I was quite a perceptive reader but can't for the life of me see what the revelation about Lieutenant Benet's past prompts Edmund Talbot to ask Miss Chomley's age, just before he proposed to her. Any help from Golding readers with more perception (and perhaps, memory of the other books in the trilogy.
Here's hoping!
Thanks in anticipation.
