'Classic Lensman Series'' by E.E. 'Doc' Smith is a science fiction series of seven books:
The Arisians are the proverbial good guys, and the Eddorians the Bad guys. The Eddorians mold the civilisations as they mature into dictatorships, with the strong praying on the weak. Meanwhile the Arisians, not being strong enough to openly oppose what the Eddorians are doing, start a breeding program on many worlds, where they try to force the life into beings more capable than themselves.
The first book details various periods in Earths history showing how the Eddorians and Arisians control the happenings. Later books then lead into the future and space travel, and the results of the breeding program really start to be noticed.
I strongly recommend this series to anybody who likes science fiction. I find the action intense, the characters believable, and the plot brilliant. I'm also intrigued with the style of predicting the future, for example, they discover a way to travel faster than light by removing the inertia from matter, but when using a computer, they still use cards with holes punched in them.

First Lensman
Galactic Patrol
Grey Lensman
Second Stage Lensman
