Les Miserables has got to be my favourite classic of all the ones that I have read so far (and I have read a lot). The tale Victor Hugo weaves is heartrendingly beautiful. I had seen the musical and series before I read the book and they told the story so well I couldn't wait to read it. I felt all the emotions that the characters felt in this novel. I felt Valjean's fear of being hunted by Javert, I felt Marius's love for Cosette and the heartbreak that this caused Eponine, and I felt Fontaine's despair at not being able to provide for her child. It almost makes me weep to think of them now. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend that you give it a try. It is one of the best-written stories I have ever read.

I consider Les Miserables to be an epic page-turner novel. The author is a professional storyteller who has mastered the art of a character and plot driven type of novel with the
plot continually having the reader in surprise, in horror or in awe at the turn of events. The Characters of The Mayor, Valjean, Fantine and Cosette are indelible, realistic, and adventurous creations.

I had an issue with this book. It was a mandatory reading one year at my school in French lessons. They made us to read a version of the book which was "adapted" to children. I hate it. I refused to get back to this novel until I watch the film, now I love the film and the novel.

I think you would like it if you enjoyed the movie. As understandable, some things are better explained in the book.

The book was enjoyable to me. I must admit that I skipped over a few passages that went into great detail about Napoleon and the events of certain battles. However, I really enjoyed the book's humanistic tone overall.

I read this book with my class in middle school, and remember after finishing it getting to watch the movie. I had never been exposed to any story like this before, and totally fell in love! I think this book really opened the door to classic literature for me. What an impactful story, so intricately woven together. I’d love to own a nice copy and reread it! For now, I’ll settle on rewatching the musical :)
