How do you react to the news that a loved one has cancer? Is there a right way to respond to it?

Three Man Game by Jim Jarrell is a non-fiction book about a husband’s journey after learning that his wife had cancer. The book started at a point where the author, Jim, had a wife and children, and they were happy. However, his happiness ended when his wife, Carol, became ill, and her doctor diagnosed her with cancer. Carol’s doctor predicted that she only had a few months to live even with chemotherapy, but Jim and Carol were determined to fight for each other and their children. Jim described his experience watching Carol fight for her life. He also wrote about how he had to balance work, taking care of his children and being there for Carol.

Carol’s optimism and the support she got from her family, especially from Jim, helped her overcome the odds, and she outlived the months her doctor predicted she would live. Jim says the years he spent with his wife fighting for her life were the best years they had together. Things later took a painful turn when Jim and his two sons lost Carol. They had to learn to live without her. Carol’s death hit Jim hard, but he had to be strong and raise their boys without Carol. He writes all about it in Three Man Game.

I loved this book. Once I started reading it, it was hard to put it down. I was able to connect with the author profoundly on an emotional level. When there was an achievement to be celebrated, I celebrated with him, and when there was bad news to be broken, I also felt terrible. The story gave me a lot of insight on how to deal with a sick loved one.

People who are affected by cancer will relate to Jim's story, and those who have lost a loved one will benefit greatly from reading this book. It will let them know that they are not alone. The pain may last a long time, but that doesn’t mean they cannot find happiness again. They have to get on with it.

There isn’t much I didn’t like about this book. However, some of the descriptions of how doctors conducted Carol’s tests made me uncomfortable. Those about her state after chemotherapy also made me nervous. I’m not good with reading about sick people and injections, and I know I'm not the only one affected by this. If you have a similar problem, consider yourself warned.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is well edited, and I enjoyed reading it. I gained a lot of insight from Jim’s story, and I believe it’s one worth sharing with everyone. Tragedy can strike anyone, and the story of how Jim and his sons dealt with theirs might help a lot of people. I recommend this book to people affected by cancer. I also recommend it to anyone who can make time to pick up a book and read. This story can add a lot of insight into your life.

Cancer treatment is no joke. It can make you sicker than the cancer. This sounds quite intense, and I'm not sure it's something I want to read about now. However, I will keep it in mind for the future. It sounds like the husband really supported his wife, which I love. Thanks.

I love being able to connect with a book on an emotional level, and I think it takes a special type of author to convey such emotions in a relatable way. In this day and age, I think it could be beneficial to have something to connect to on a more personal/human level. I also appreciated that the reviewer took the time to explain that there are some more technical moments to the book that can make people uncomfortable, although I personally enjoy the technical aspects of medical procedures. It sounds like a really interesting book, and I hope to read it in the future. Thank you.

This reminds me a bit of And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer by Fredrik Backman. They just have different illnesses. I'll have to give this book a read sometime. Thanks for the review.

A touching story I must say. I taught she was gonna survive at first, after she outlived the months predicted by her doctor. but later on, the tragic story no one ever wants to hear happens
carol is dead. I learnt a little from optimistic carol, you should always keep the faith, no matter how low the odds might be, you keep pushing.
But it's painful she died. poor jim.

Took me some time to read although the story was very touchy and we musn't under look a cancer patient because of his sick alarm running in his head.

This feels like an emotional book to read. As much as I want to delve on how Jim and his children cope up with their loss, I don't think I can push through the emotional struggle.

I enjoyed your review. I imagine it was difficult to learn about all of the difficulties endured by this family. It must have been healing for the author to write about it. It sounds like the book captures the range of emotions well.

It's truly a marvelous story of love and sacrifice for their love ones. I love the plot. Its credit definitely goes to Jim who cared for his sick wife and never made her feel a useless entity.
