Official Review: Untamed Worlds: Citadels of poetic prose

[Following is the official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Untamed Worlds: Citadels of poetic prose" by Justin Somerset.]

“Untamed Worlds” is a non-fiction book of about 40 pages in length. It is a compilation of poems broken into different chapters and genres. I am not a big poetic reader, but I found that it would be suitable for either the avid poem lover, or someone like me who hasn’t read poetry in a long time. All in all, I found it to be an interesting read.

The book opens with the best chapter of all; dark, violent, passionate and keeps you reading every line of the poem. The length of the poems are not very long, 20-25 lines per poem. You can tell that the author put his best work up front to keep people reading, and it worked! The middle chapters were the weakest part of the book. The genre changes to a happier tone, but falls flat, and the author was pushing some of the words, and experiences on the reader. I felt the emotions were lacking true feelings, and the word selection was amateur and trivial.

Luckily, the author brings back the anger and passionate tone towards the end of the book, with some excellent poems. It was almost like the first chapter and the last chapter was written at the same time, with similar experiences and life’s battles inspiring the author. The middle chapters should have been omitted and the author should have stayed with his stronger prose.

If you want to read dark and deep emotional poems, than I would recommend this book. I give the book 3 out of 4 stars. It is worth reading for both poetic and non-poetic readers. Being that both the poems and length of book are short, it could help with authors or writers that are facing a block and need some inspiration. I found just by recently reading it, that my writing has improved and my choice of words and their location in the sentence fragment became important.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I did not give it all 4 stars, because some of the chapters were not up to the same caliber as the dark, violent, and deeply emotional ones in the beginning and end of the book. If the happy poems were taken out, this book would get the 4th star!
