Review of Health is a Habit
Alright! Let’s admit that there are endless books on the market, articles on the internet, videos on social media, and other relevant platforms that are filled with an array of information about health fads, diets, exercise routines, and much more. However, there are times when, despite the overflow of information and knowledge, we tend to just treat these videos, books, articles, and the like as another form of leisure scrolling because we hardly implement any of it in our lives. “Health is a Habit” by Julie S. Massey is another addition to this pile; however, am I saying it is not worth your time? Absolutely not! In fact, it is worth all your time, and here is why.
Well, this book does not contain any information that you may have never read or heard of before, as the author also says and agrees in the book. Yet, this book is a wonderful reminder in a very concise form that will help you think about your health seriously and give you that motivating push. However, at the end of the day, it all boils down to whether you want to do it or not. So, what does this book talk about?
Well, this book covers important subjects like lifestyle, exercise, nutrition, stress, sleep, dental health, addiction, and smoking. Julie says that the goal of "Health is a Habit" is to help us realize how our lifestyle affects our quality of life over time. It is a primer and a reminder to increase your interest in and awareness of how poor daily habits affect your long-term health. It is sad to see how most people take better care of their family, friends, and even their automobiles than they take care of their health. This is exactly why this book has been written: to make us aware and take better care of our health.
The author starts by talking about exercise, stressing that to live well, we need to stay active. Julie explains how aerobic exercise, strength training, and flexibility exercises help us and gives tips on how to fit them into our daily lives.
She then talks about nutrition, underscoring its importance. Julie tells us to make it a habit to read labels and opt for food items that are low in sugar and fat and have more fiber content. She asks us to choose food products that are clearly marked as containing ‘no trans-fat,’ and those that have a minimum quantity of additives. The reason for this is that trans fat increases the tastiness of food but clogs the arteries and increases body fat. This is something I did not know. The author is kind enough to understand that we have busy lives and it may not be possible to take care of our nutrition meticulously every day, which is why she has tried to give these practical solutions and emphasized taking baby steps.
The book then talks about other subjects, like stress and sleep, and how they play a vital role in our overall health. Julie has included some ways to manage and relieve stress and has also stated the benefits of stress management. My favorite one was to maintain a stress journal, wherein she tells us to write down a stressful event, what caused the stress, and how we responded to it mentally and physically. This, in my opinion, is a very helpful solution that would actually work. Talking about sleep, Julie has shown how a lack of sleep contributes to a number of diseases and other health complications. She has tried providing solutions for that as well. Lastly, the book touches on topics of dental health, addiction, and the health effects of smoking, which are equally helpful.
In my personal opinion, though this book does not necessarily offer something new or something that you don’t already know, it is still a wonderfully curated guide that is concise and to the point. It is simple and provides practical solutions that can be implemented. The book also includes some examples that the author had with her clients, which were refreshing to read and relate to. I also liked how every chapter is preceded by a comic strip and a quote by famous personalities that relate to the chapter. The language used is simple and easy to understand. Thus, considering all of these points and nothing to dislike, I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. There were a handful of typographical errors throughout the book, but they did not affect my reading experience at all.
In summary, "Health is a Habit" urges you to prioritize your health. As the author emphasizes, "Healthy choices lead to healthy habits, and healthy habits lead to healthy lifestyles." I recommend this book to anyone who is committed to adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
