Review of No Bullet Got Me Yet
War separates us from our loved ones and brings enormous grief and death. It destroys homes, cities, and our future. We should learn to prefer peace and communication above conflict. By means of dialogue and common ground establishment, we can contribute to averting the misery and destruction resulting from war. People living, loving, and free from war produce a better world for everybody. Choosing peace instead of conflict saves lives and preserves what really matters to us.
The book emphasizes Chaplain Emil Kapaun's performance during the War, in which he showed great attention to soldiers' spiritual needs. Not only that, the book gave an account of the life he lived before the war. The book provides a historical background for the Korean War and the division of Korea. In POW camps, the accounts of Lieutenant William Funchess and several people detail their experiences where Kapaun's altruistic compassion motivated them. Despite difficult circumstances, Kapaun left a significant influence on people who encountered him by offering spiritual support, rendering selfless service, and completing the last rite for the dead. Marked by his relentless faith and deeds of heroism, Kapaun's legacy as a chaplain, Catholic priest, and selfless servant survives.
No Bullet Got Me Yet by John Stansifer is a book that captures the essence of Kapaun’s character and the impact he had on those around him. Paying tribute to Chaplain Emil Kapaun's unflinching faith and bravery, the book is a gripping and inspirational work. Emphasizing the unselfish dedication of U.S. Army chaplains, the foreword establishes the tone and features Kapaun as a model of service and sacrifice. From his modest beginnings in Kansas to his final sacrifice in a POW camp in Korea, Stansifer deftly combines historical background with personal narrative.
There is nothing I don’t like about the book, except that war should always be avoided. It leaves behind bitter memories and robs us of our own. I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. The book also offers a rich historical background, covering the convoluted history of Korea and the events before the Korean War, so strengthening a better awareness of the larger background in which these personal stories develop. I recommend the book to those readers who seek inspirational biographies and those who appreciate stories of heroism and selflessness.
The book is exceptionally well-edited. Father Kapaun's story sounded almost fictional to me, so to ensure it was real, I had to look him up online. How can a man be so selfless? I was shocked and moved to tears after reading this book. In a world where people often prioritize themselves, here was a man who placed the safety and happiness of others before his own. In the pain I feel, considering what he went through and his character, I learned the importance of selfless service to humanity. Father Kapaun truly lived an exemplary life, and I can't believe I was so deeply moved by something that happened many years ago.
The book's heroism of Father Kapaun strikes me as particularly noteworthy. Indeed, other chaplains, like Chaplain Felhoelter, tried their best for the wellbeing of the people. This can be seen when his group realized they couldn't flee the attackers while hauling the injured from the battlefield. Chaplain Felhoelter instructed his group to run away, leaving him with the injured. What happened after that took me on a roller coaster of emotions. I therefore wish to commend all the chaplains and soldiers who risk their lives for our sake.
