Review of It’s All In The Lyrics
It’s All in the Lyrics by Tony Kessel is a non-fictional book that follows the life of the author as he navigates through the difficulties of life using music as his guiding force. For every situation he encountered in life, there was a song to accompany it; some served as a source of encouragement, while others just perfectly described his situation. He strongly believed that experiences could be associated with music and that music could serve as a powerful reminder for memories, whether pleasant or unpleasant.
At a very tender age, the author started experiencing life difficulties, ranging from his parents getting divorced to struggling to find acceptance. He struggled with an identity crisis, and music was his only source of solace. After several attempts, he eventually succeeded in his transition from music consumption to music production. When he eventually found his foot as an adult, he found himself resembling his father in ways that had initially shaped his own life struggles. Will music continually serve as a source of solace for him? Or will his life become so complicated that even music becomes a burden?
I loved this non-fiction book because it provided an intimate and detailed exploration of the author’s profound connection with music. The author’s ability to convey the transformative power of music, both as a solace and a means of self-discovery, resonated deeply with me. The literary style was compelling, making it easy to feel connected to the author’s emotional highs and lows.
Although I found the book’s depiction of the author’s journey with music deeply insightful, I found some scenes overly detailed, almost making the book boring. Also, I felt the plot was a little disorganized, with disparate scenes discussing unrelated topics closely following one another, thus breeding confusion. But despite these flaws, it was still a good read and would appeal greatly to music enthusiasts.
I rate the book four out of five stars because of the issues I earlier mentioned. Despite it being the author’s debut, it was perfectly edited and void of grammatical errors, which enhanced a smooth reading experience. I recommend this book to lovers of music.
