Review of How to start and operate a small business
Starting a business and succeeding at it can be very tasking if one does not have the right knowledge. Dr. Maxine Mendez-Williams has made this very easy in her book. She gives detailed analysis and steps to starting and running a business. How to Run and Operate a Business, just like the name, is a short business handbook for anyone planning to start a business. It is like a short handbook or guide that contains everything needed in business, right from the types and their features down to the various elements that make the said business work.
Seeing the high rate of failed businesses, I think this book came at the perfect time. Most new business owners do not check many important steps before going into business, and this has led to the downfall of many promising businesses. Dr. Maxine included twenty common pitfalls that most small business owners encounter while running their businesses. I found this list to be very useful because I could see some of the pitfalls that affected my business in the past. From how she wrote, you can see that she is really passionate about helping small business owners. For instance, she included the contact information of a trusted business expert, websites that can aid funding, a comprehensive list of marketing agencies, and additional resources.
My only complaint was that I discovered some errors and editing issues. For instance, some points on the same were bulleted while others were not. Also, some subheadings were not differentiated from the points. It was somehow hard to tell them apart. Apart from this, there was nothing I disliked about it. Readers should note that this book is a short guide and does not go into the complex details of business. Instead, it guides you on where to look and what to research.
I rate it 5 out of 5 stars because the benefits of this book greatly overshadow the negatives. It is a book that can be enjoyed by anyone, but I especially recommend it to anyone who is looking to start a new business. There is a lot to be learned from reading How to Run and Operate a Business by Dr. Maxine Mendez-Williams.
