Review of Speedy Hurled Through Havoc
Speedy: Hurled Through Havoc (Tales of a Traveling Airbrush Book 1) by Dave Letterfly Knoderer is a memoir taking us through the author's life in the circus and as an airbrush artist.
The author, Dave "Letterfly" Knoderer, chanced upon the highway as a home concept and fell in love with the idea. So, in 1970, right out of high school, he decided to join the circus to pursue his dream life, something his father disapproved of strongly. However, the author needed to get out of home and live a life he would enjoy. There were a lot of problems at home. Although he loved his father, the author did not get enough fatherly attention from him. His father was a hard-to-please perfectionist, and there were a few things to look forward to in their dysfunctional home, which, outwardly, appeared perfect. The author was not loved properly as a child—something that would, later in life, trigger some bad lifestyle choices. Read this book to follow the author's circus and artistic journeys and his path to recovery.
This book gave me a feeling that I would enjoy it right from the start. When I read the acknowledgment section, I instantly felt I was about to read a great book. This book presents several things I would love in a memoir and more. Several things stood out for me. First, I liked that the book's contents were well delivered. The author's writing prowess and passion are evident. Readers get a vivid picture of circus life, airbrushing, and some of the ins and outs of such lifestyles. Second, this book is laden with life lessons, some of which came from unexpected or less-thought-of areas, like the author's relationships and interactions with the circus animals and nature in general. Finally, I liked the honesty with which the author detailed his recovery journey from childhood traumas and poor lifestyle choices, which readers in the same circumstances will benefit from.
I am glad to give Speedy: Hurled Through Havoc (Tales of a Traveling Airbrush Book 1) by Dave Letterfly Knoderer five out of five stars. I have given it the perfect rating, as there was nothing I disliked about it and for the above-mentioned positives. I only found a few errors, which were not enough to influence my final rating.
If you are a naturalist, a circus fan, or just in need of a book with invaluable life lessons, I highly recommend this memoir to you. In general, fans of memoirs will appreciate it. Since I enjoyed this book, I look forward to reading its sequel, whose teaser the author, thankfully, provided at the book's ending.
