Review of The Reverend Psychopath
The Reverend Psychopath documents the story of Rev. Samuel Cotton. I love true crime documentaries and books. When I chose to read the book, nothing prepared me for the outrageous horror stories I would read about a selfish and heartless human.
The book details the life and crimes committed by 'Reverend' Cotton. He started as an enthusiastic advocate for Protestantism. Together with his wife, they ran an orphanage in Caragh. They would take in children with the pretense of wanting to care for them. What the children in the orphanage suffered was outrageous. The orphanage leaked of death, starvation, and vermin. Read this book to understand more about these atrocities.
This book evoked anger, disgust, and absolute pity. This book brings to light how far we have come as humans. It is almost unbelievable that humans are capable of inflicting pain on others, let alone small and helpless children barely months old. When reading this book, you will know the atrocities committed against humanity.
What I loved about this book was the raw authenticity portrayed throughout. The author did not hide any information and clearly showed the happenings in the orphanage. The image of the state of the children was clear despite there being no actual photo. This was achieved by the author's skill in word-description.
However, this book has a few issues. I didn't particularly appreciate that the book's tone sounded old-school. I felt that the language used was not up to date. I had to confirm the book's publication date. If you are interested in something modern, this book may not be for your liking.
The book also has several errors, ranging from speech marks to awkward phrasing of words. This was a turn-off for me. Due to all the reasons above, I have to take off two stars. I therefore rate the book 3 out of 5 stars.
I recommend this book to true-crime lovers. The book's mood is quite somber. The description of the state of events is quite heavy. Anyone without a strong heart should probably steer away from this book.
