Review of Self
In this self-help book, the author deploys four elements, self-awareness, self-reflection, self-healing, and self-reflection, to realize transformation in our lives. Rita Yost lost her mother before turning two years old.
As an orphan, she was exposed to not only physical abuse but also psychological abuse. She had to numb her feelings at a young age to survive in her environment. Such abuse plunged Yost into drug and substance abuse, and she eventually landed in prison. Deep down, Yost felt that she needed change, which began by accepting that she needed assistance. Diagnosed with BPD by a psychiatrist, her recovery wasn't smooth.
The book's message revolves around the 'self.' Most times, people fail to discover their innate abilities. Self-awareness, according to the author, is the first step to empowerment. The former refers to the conscious knowledge of one's character and feelings, while empowerment is becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one's life. Though I do it subconsciously, I was reminded that focusing more on things we want to change enhances self-awareness.
I came across interesting assertions. For instance, the majority perceive fear as retrogressive. Yost describes how this menace can be used to our advantage. While seeking perfectionism motivates us to be at our best, its effects can be detrimental. I liked that Yost acknowledges a high possibility of relapse when striving to transform ourselves. In such cases, we need to be patient to fix ourselves. Another reminder is using positive affirmations over negative ones to motivate ourselves. My favorite part is under the self-care section; the author mentions that disconnecting our destructive behaviors from our personalities is vital. It reminded me that my setbacks do not necessarily define me.
Other than the multiple grammatical errors that led me to deduct a star, I didn't find anything to dislike in this book. It motivated me and encouraged me that I can change anything I don't like. I will eagerly 'strive for action and not perfection.' If you have a past holding you back from making strides, Rita Yost's life story in Self will help you tap into your innate abilities, and her insights will empower you in your journey. Anyone discouraged about life can check out this book also. I rate Self 4 out of 5 stars.
