"How Successful People Think Smart" Official Review
The book is written by a doctor of psychology with something like 40+ years of experience. She is noted to have studied under very well esteemed professors and her life experience is exemplary. While i have a hard time with psychology as a science (i got a degree in biology and have been taught that while the profession is to be respected it's hard to cram into a hard and fast science) i really did get a lot from Dr. Jill's helpful little book. The way the book works is simple; the doctor tells you something that will help you think smarter, give you the biochemical reason it helps, and give you examples of practicing the thing that will assist you.
The most memorable, implementable and helpful thing i took away from this book is that sometimes being a multi-tasker is self defeating. if you're constantly stressed trying to do to many things at once, not everything can get done and the things that do get done won't be the highest quality. When you're not giving everything your best, your brain isn't functioning optimally. Dr Jill gives examples of focusing on single tasking instead of multiple tasking and how that focus can actually help your brain. Interestingly she goes into detail regarding how to multi task and expand your brain so that you are capable of understanding what multiple things may be asked of you.
The second best thing about this book, to me at least, was how in the beginning Dr. Jill explains that our brain can set us up for failure if we don't focus our energy on changing our thought patters. In a lot of the literature on any kind of self help the main point authors try to get across is that thoughts are real and tangible things. What we think is what we end up creating. One of my favorite examples, and one that hits home quite hard is the explanation of financial insecurity. When you think back to your past experiences of failure when it comes to debt you are re-enforcing your thought patterns you will always be in debt. In order to get out of debt, you have to change your thought patters, think to the future, and see yourself being successful with your finances. The more you practice the better you get and the more your thoughts become reality. When you use this capacity your making new neural connections and the more connections you have the smarter you are becoming.
For such a short read, that doesn't cost very much ( i think maybe $1.99) I would recommend this book to anyone trying to get ahead and become smarter. The more connections we make in our brain the more connections we can make in our world, and the more connections in the world the better off we will likely be in so many areas. I hope a few people will at least take the twenty minutes of their time and see what valuable information they may glean out of this short little wonderfully positive book.
