Review of Speak Up! Tell Your Story to Influence Others
Speak Up! Tell Your Story to Influence Others by Susana G. Baumann teaches the art of storytelling with a multicultural approach.
The book begins by showing how storytelling is part of our daily lives, from movies and books to marketing and public speaking. It explains how the brain responds to stories, triggering emotional reactions based on past experiences and memories.
After an initial theory chapter, the book quickly moves into practical exercises. It helps readers uncover their personal values, character traits, cultural attributes, and leadership skills while also addressing their weaknesses. These concepts are illustrated with the author’s personal experiences, movie commentaries, and real-life stories of others.
As readers progress, they'll learn how to structure and present their stories, focusing on core messages, audience relatability, and cultural elements. The book emphasizes the importance of conflicts in stories and covers essential elements such as characters and plot.
Baumann’s experience as an Argentine immigrant who built a successful career in the US despite significant hardships adds a rich multicultural perspective to the book. She addresses issues like discrimination, gender gaps, and cultural differences in the workplace and community, showing how storytelling can help resolve these challenges.
One thing I must commend is the book’s structure. It’s full of information, yet the author makes it really easy to navigate with a detailed table of contents and strong coherence between sections. She walks the reader through her concepts smoothly, using familiar movies to make connections. The writing feels personal and engaging, as if she’s speaking directly to me and encouraging me to develop my own story. In the end, there’s a self-awareness guide to help readers build their stories or personal brand using what they've just learned. It’s truly an all-in-one guide for storytelling.
There’s nothing I dislike about this book. It effectively presents ideas, offers comprehensive tools, and motivates readers to take action. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to immigrants wanting to make their voices heard and deal with workplace discrimination, as well as to anyone looking to improve their storytelling skills for both professional and personal use.
