Review of I Blew My Diet! Now What?
If there is one thing I have noticed over time, it is that at some point in every human's life, we have either struggled with weight loss, weight gain, or even maintaining a proper diet. What makes this book the gem that it is? This book, I Blew My Diet! Now What? by Connie Bennett, is a self-help book with a 21-day plan to help us lose weight, recover from diet challenges, and control our overeating habits.
The author shares her story of weight gain. It all started after the passing of her mom, whom she was taking care of after she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. As a result of grief and battling the loss of a loved one, she started to overeat and turn to comfort foods such as movie popcorn, corn chips, and other processed carbs. Her emotional eating led her to gain 21 pounds in 6 months, which made her feel like a hypocrite because she had just published a book titled "Beyond Sugar Shock," and she was known for helping others break free from sugar and carb addiction. She decided to take life back into her hands when she almost fainted at a food supermarket. She started to analyze her eating habits and how processed carbs contributed to her weight gain.
The author starts with the obvious issue, which is weight gain; she explains that numerous reasons, such as stress, grief, peer pressure, and hormonal changes, cause weight gain. She further analyzed the different ways one could get back in shape. She comes up with a 21-day program that includes daily activities, such as mindful eating, stress management, and goal setting. She also includes a modified ketogenic diet (KetoMod) focusing on blood sugar balance, nutrient-dense foods, and portion control. She also discusses the importance of changing one's mindset to achieve long-term goals.
One of the things I like about this book is how relatable it is. This is because the author shared her personal story, which is something many people currently face. I also appreciate that the author included detailed practical steps to help anyone control their eating habits. The part that stands out the most is when the author addresses the emotional aspects of overeating, including the steps to heal from grief, trauma, and stress. The author was also thoughtful enough to leave a comprehensive food shopping list and meal plan to help people who have decided to take their health journey to the next level.
The only thing I didn't like or disagree with is that the modified ketogenic diet might not be suitable for everyone, especially people who have specific dietary restrictions. The book was repetitive, especially the part that discussed the 21 reasons for overeating. While this book might not be for everyone, it is an excellent choice for people who want to change their eating habits and overall health. When it comes to the book's editing, it was flawless, as I did not spot a single error while I read the book. Despite the dislikes I mentioned, I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars because the dislikes did not affect the book's message or lessons learned in the book. It was very educative and easy to understand as well.
