Review of Washing The Inside Of The Cup
There are certain books that you read that change your life from the inside out. This short book, Washing the Inside of the Cup: My Journey of Walking in the Spirit by Cheryl Lynn, is a personal memoir that details her life bit by bit as she builds and deepens her walk with God. The purpose of this book is to show us the transformative power of seeking God wholeheartedly.
The book begins with her childhood stories of how she was brought up in a loving Christian family. This is like the perfect Christian family, where neither parent smoked, drank, or even cussed. As a young child, she was smart, with the highest IQ among her classmates. Coming from a Christian home, she attended regular church services and other weekly services in the church. Her father taught her gratitude, and how not to complain, and at 15, she accepted Jesus as her lord and personal saviour.
Things went down the drain in her twenties when she got married. She got married to a man who was raised the opposite of how she was raised; he complained about everything she did and didn't treat her right, or make her feel like she was loved. She endured this abusive marriage for years, but what makes her story stand out is that these dark times she faced drew her closer to God. She learnt to depend more on him and to renew her mind and spirit with the word of God constantly. She experienced miracles beyond her wildest dreams and truly experienced God's grace and faithfulness, both in her life and in the lives of her children.
What I really loved about this book is that despite the constant turmoil the author experienced day to day in her marriage, she maintained perfect peace in her heart and her walk with God, which showed how much of her life she had surrendered to God. The author also wrote this book in a way that motivated me to build a strong relationship with God; this is because it was easy for me to understand from her story that bad days will come, but God will always be by my side to help me through them. I also liked how this book was written; it was segmented in such a way that helped me follow the author's story without getting confused or lost in the timeline. The last thing that stood out to me is that the author backed every point in this book with Bible passages, which made her story even more authentic.
I have no dislikes for this book, although I think the author overemphasised keeping one's mind fixed on God. This also helped to emphasise its importance and how crucial it is to have a good relationship with God. There is so much to learn from this book, and it truly uplifts the spirit of any Christian. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for the reasons above, and I recommend it to Christians and people willing to start a new relationship with God.
