Leigh Fondakowski's book Jonestown Stories.

Post by Elizabeth Rogers 47 »

I just read this book about what happened after the tragedy in Jonestown, Guyana in November of 1978.
The book was written largely by interviews with as many of the survivors of the murder/suicide as were willing to talk. Also interviewed were news reporters whose magazine and newspaper articles moved Jim Jones to move his flock to South America.

The book shows that there were many reasons why people joined People's Temple. It gives some explanations of why they stayed even when they knew the healings were fake, and when they realized that Jim Jones was not who or what they'd thought.

I enjoyed reading about why people got involved, what was there about the era that kept the movement going, and how individuals reacted to their arrival at Jonestown, when they realized how they had been lied to.

Lastly, I enjoyed reading about how these ninety-some individuals survived, and how they dealt with survivor's guilt.

Has anyone else read this?
