Review of How Will My Wagon Get Fixed?
It was heart-consoling to read “How Will My Wagon Get Fixed?” Written by Eric Swanson. Many times, when we don't get what we want from life, we feel discouraged. It gets worse when we grieve, especially when we can't understand why things happen the way they do and why we can't figure out our way through it, but the actual truth is that, in life, we don't always get what we want. No matter how disappointing, failure is part of life. In this book, Eric talked about how we can go through these disappointments knowing that God is still with us. He suggests viewing the challenges we come across in life from the aspect of God putting us right with him for a better future.
Eric explains that to overcome the frustration that comes with disappointments, one has to abide in faith, ignoring the endless uncertainties that come from the outside and dwelling in the peace of God from within. Our challenges and setbacks don't entirely define us; they don't mean that we are entirely written off. We must believe that God never leaves us and that we can't evade him no matter how we try. This book explains that God loves us just like a father loves his child, and he is always out to protect and correct us. The author uses biblical references and personal experiences to describe that believing in God and going through tough times gives us the strength to persevere.
There is an interesting part of this book that serves as an eye-opener where it explains a misconception of faith that God doesn't have to reward us for being good because we are good people as a result of His love within us. Also, we don't earn God's love by being perfect or flawless because he loves us just the way we are. He knows the uncertainties that we bear inside and is willing to walk through the huddles with us. Through personal struggles, the author describes how embracing God's grace helps in understanding faith.
Another interesting part is how Eric addresses the feeling of not being able to meet the demands of life: personal demands, social demands, and otherwise. Most times it makes us feel like we don't measure up to an average personality. The author explained that people often place their self-value on the demands and achievements of life instead of God's love. He wrote about how his past challenges and struggles, delayed career progression, and criticisms he encountered could have weighed him down, but he stayed patient and content in the knowledge that God's plan was ultimate and would gradually unfold.
There are lots of things I love about this book; I love the fact that there are questions to use for personal reflection at the end of every chapter. The questions are deep and help to stimulate profound understanding. They navigate special attention towards personal relationships with God, faith, and courage to go through life trusting God in every situation, seeing every challenge as a prompt from God to learn something important about life and love for God and others. These questions stand as guides for actual reality checks, better understanding, and personal growth in spirit. They also made the book more engaging and interesting throughout. Additionally, I love the way the author explained with illustrations from the Bible's scriptures, especially the accuracy in the examples he gave with David's story: how David passed through many trials and challenges before he finally became king. Lastly, I love how the author uses these personal questions to remind readers about the things to consider while in their state of reflection for a better understanding of their experiences.
While this book appears to have undergone editing, I still find some errors that disrupt my reading experience, and I feel they could benefit from further refinement to ensure clarity. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars, deducting one star mainly for the errors in the book, although the errors don’t diminish the passion within these messages that the author passed across. There is nothing I dislike about this book; it carries sincere teachings and guidance about understanding God and living a life of faith, and it feels like a special gift to anyone facing life’s struggles.
I highly recommend this book to Christians facing rejection, confusion, and hard luck. I also encourage anyone who needs encouragement with their faith to read it, as it provides reassurance that trusting in God’s process brings peace, consoles the heart, and is truly worth it.
