Review of Enhancing Your Endocannabinoid System
I rate Enhancing Your Endocannabinoid System by Justin Kander as a five out of five due to the book's level of thought, research, and organization.
The book leans heavily into scientific research, discussing the endocannabinoid system in mammalian (human and animal) bodies and what it needs to maintain homeostasis. Kander did a great job explaining the endocannabinoid system and making it understandable. I had to take notes to keep everything straight, as science is not my forte, and a lot of biology and chemistry are involved in explaining how everything works. I started with the audiobook but switched to reading on my Kindle when I realized how technical the text was.
In summary, without giving anything away, the author first explains the endocannabinoid system, what it regulates, and why it is important. Kander then goes on to discuss various ailments and diseases and how they are affected by the endocannabinoid system chapter by chapter. It delves both into the physical and mental health issues, what causes them if known, and how the properties of THC or CBD have reacted during research studies. The third section of the book covers ways to strengthen the endocannabinoid system in your body to maintain health and prevent disease using various means such as nutrition (foods, drinks, herbs, probiotics, etc.), improving mental health, and physical aspects such as exercise, alternative and integrative medicines, and, of course, cannabis. The conclusion is set up well and circles back around by summarizing the "Top 11 Ways to Enhance Your Endocannabinoid System."
There is a great deal of scientific research, and one of the things that I enjoyed about this book is that the author discussed both positive and negative or contrary thoughts and results from studies. Even as an academic, writing nonbiased research can be difficult, so I applaud such well-fleshed-out research. That being said, this book was pretty technical, and some of what I was reading went over my head, but outside of biology and chemistry, I was able to follow along and learn quite a bit. I have to think that this book was intended as an academic or scholarly text. It is written in APA style with heavy in-text citations. I wouldn't recommend this for anybody who isn't at least college-age, but I would especially recommend it for those who are interested in health, cannabis, medicine, biology, or chemistry.
