CHRISTIAN ORTHODOXY: A Closer Look is a book written by Joseph Grogan. In this book, the author, a theologian, looks back at the origins of Christianity, the Virgin Mary, and the first Christian bishops who shaped the church we know today.

This book is fascinating. With simple words, the author takes us to the origins of Christianity. They revisit the origins of the Virgin Mary, the crucifixion of Jesus, and his relationship with God.
The author explains all the most relevant theories that have been raised over the centuries, all the political decisions that may have influenced the writing of the Gospels, and the origins of the various evangelists. They even go as far as to show the notable differences between the Gospels and to explain what motivated some choices of their authors!

The author explains the schism between Jews and Christians, the morality of the time, and the stories of some of Jesus' most famous relatives: his brother James, Peter, and others. The book is accessible to all, easy to read, and easily understandable.
The author's thematic and chronological approach makes their explanations of the origins of Christianity and the reasons why Christianity is the way it is today much clearer. In short, the author's approach is perfect for understanding the origins of Christianity, segment by segment.

It's hard to find a fault with this book. However, I have one criticism that sort of sticks out for me: the book, although easy to read, is rather dense. It lacks illustrations, or at least some illustrated timeline to help you find your way around and more easily situate the various dates and events.

Overall, I rate CHRISTIAN ORTHODOXY: A Closer Look 5 out of 5. It is easy to understand; complex words are few and far between, and the different parts of the book are well segmented. It is also worth noting that the editing is flawless.
I found it somewhat lacking in images and illustrations to lighten the density of the material and help one better navigate the chronology. Otherwise, I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the origins of this complex religion.
