Sometimes, I like to read something completely out of my element, hoping I might be surprised.
Three Strike Runner by Pierce Everett is about the unique journey of returning his boat Whitetail to the US. Throughout the story, Mr. Everett recalls some childhood memories and why he decided to smuggle high-quality hashish from Morocco. He was expecting that would help him with his financial struggles.
After a couple of months in the ocean, Mr. Everett thought he would soon go back home. Little did he know what was waiting for him at the shore. Despite the setbacks, he continued and changed his plans, hoping it would work out. However, there were still many more obstacles he never saw coming, even in his personal life.
I thought the story was well-written. Three Strike Runner was well-paced, and the plot was coherent. Mr. Everett described his time in the ocean, and every step throughout his journey was well explained. I had many questions, which were all answered. Maps were included in some chapters to show his trajectory.
Throughout the narrative, Mr. Everett describes the events and the reasons behind his decisions. I was intrigued to know more about his reasoning and see if he would succeed. However, the beginning was very slow, and I fell asleep, which is never good. I had to go back a few pages but decided to continue. Also, I could not find anything worth remembering. Unfortunately, I was not as surprised as I thought I would. For those reasons, I rate the book 3 out of 5 stars.
The editing was good, as I could not find any typos. My copy was not working well with Kindle; I had to zoom in on every page to read it comfortably. I could recommend this book to anybody thinking about smuggling anything; it might change their mind.

Sounds like an interesting dive into the risks and realities of smuggling, but if it couldn’t hold attention or leave a lasting impression, that’s a bit disappointing. At least the storytelling and pacing were solid.
