“Growth is not a destination, but a continuous process of self-discovery and improvement.” That phrase stuck with me the most.

Escaping the Narcissistic Abuse Prison by Joan Hannon is a non-fiction book that will help you rediscover yourself in the face of toxic relationships with narcissistic individuals. While the book is focused more on the romantic relationship side of the issue, I think it has very valuable information that will help you overcome any type of toxic relationship, such as with your job, a family member, or even yourself.

The book has many tips and best practices (such as dancing, keeping a journal, therapy, and connecting with your hobbies and interests) that will help you strengthen your relationship with yourself and get to a place where you will know how to deal with narcissistic individuals.

The book also gives you the key concepts and the common traits narcissistic individuals have so you can identify them and the red flags.

The book itself feels like an exercise of positive reinforcement. Even though it recommends things like keeping a journal several times, it doesn’t feel repetitive, as the author is trying to make the point of how key behaviors can help you improve your mental strength. This is also reinforced with the summary with key points that each chapter has at the end, which I think was a nice touch to add to the book.

Finally, the book also gives you recommendations of other books and resources, such as apps, that you can use to further investigate the subject and to help you with your journey of self-healing.

I am giving the book 4 out of 5 stars. It would have been a perfect rating if not for the grammar and editing errors that I found, which are the only complaints I have about the book because, overall, I would recommend it to anyone who is feeling lost in their relationships or to anyone who simply wants to improve their relationships with themselves and, therefore, with others, as I liked the book a lot due to all the helpful tips and information that it provides to spot red flags in narcissistic and how to deal with them.

Yes, growth characterizes sustained improvement and there are toxic people within a tainted world indeed.
