Review of Man After God
Mr. Chen in Man After God described the utter fulfillment of a man truly seeking after God and his joy in Jesus Christ found in the deepest part of his soul. He described wonders that exceed the beauty of a muted and bright orange, red, and yellow sunset, the translucent blue water of a high mountain lake filled with sleek rainbow-colored trout, the light snow falling on your shoulder as you walk through a lush garden resplendent with long white roses and violet wildflowers hiding in the corner of a sand dune bending in the ocean breezes.
His life was not easy nor one that people idealize when they hear of a devout follower of Jesus Christ, but instead was a life permeated by plans to commit suicide, terrible danger from a burning ship, burns, permanent injury, loss of a career, addiction to cigarettes and alcohol, physical exhaustion, and two failed marriages. He did not live on a mountain top, or in a luxuriant home, or in a state of bliss, but led a simple life like most of us. Even his third wife, a godly woman who through a pulmonary fibrosis support group touched hundreds, eventually could no longer cope with her disease and became mean. He was a humble man and did an excellent job of describing the ways he has encouraged so many men to be better husbands and fathers, without bragging.
He described a Lord who is sympathetic, nurturing, compassionate, and empathetic. He quoted many verses of scripture which complemented his story and his testimony. He had worldly goals such as buying a single-family house, but those did not distract him from seeking God’s heart. The book is well-written and well-edited. It is ideal for readers of all ages and for people anywhere on their spiritual journey.
During a long career as a civil engineer, I have worked with people in the engineering and construction industry who have a strong faith like Mr. Chen’s and have experienced the resulting joy. I have also met many people who are exploring a faith like Mr. Chen’s.
Because Mr. Chen was transparent about his faith, successes, failures, joys, and pains, and it was well-edited, I gave it 5 out of 5 stars. I am confident that you will be enriched as you find a quiet place and prayerfully enjoy this book.
